Search Engine Optimisation

What is SEO?

SEO is short for “Search Engine Optimisation”. Good SEO helps a website get found, get chosen, and convert new business.

SEO is the marketing holy grail! Getting SEO right means that when someone searches for a keyword relating to your business, you appear higher up the organic listings ahead of your competitors, AND, you don’t have to pay for the privilege. Sounds amazing?! BUT the not-so-good news is that getting SEO right is a very tough job, and can be an intricate and lengthy process- it’s not just a case of turning something on (unfortunately!).

Search engines like Google choose who ranks where, and that is decided by their very complex algorithms (like a set of instructions) which is made up of hundreds of signals helping them piece together how relevant your website is, and where on the search engine page it should rank for the search term.

So, basically, this is how Google decides where you rank:

Google spiders crawl the web by visiting web pages.
They add optimised pages to their index and catalog them.
People search the web, Google shows best results based on the search term.

We don’t have a psychic to explicitly tell us Google’s ranking factors and algorithms, but best practice says that if you get these 3 things right, we can get in their SEO good books (and onto page 1!):

Onsite SEO: This is your website and all its content and landing pages. Making sure all content is relevant, regular, unique and readable, and also contains some keywords that link back to search behaviour. This makes your content useful to your reader but also helps with Google.

Offsite SEO: Google also looks at other internet pages that link to your site. If these sites are good then it shows you are popular, relevant and active which gives your site authority (which is good in Google’s books). This is called link building and means building relationships with other businesses and giving them a reason to share a link to your site.

Technical SEO: Google also looks behind the scenes of your website- so all the technical stuff. Is your site speed fast enough? Is your site structure optimised so Google can crawl it? Are you making the most of your title tags and meta descriptions? Canonical & hreflang tags? Yikes, right?! But being aware of these things can all help improve your website’s organic visibility.
